Artist's Statement

Working From Life

"Working from life" is the term for when an artist draws, sculpts, or paints directly from observation, directly from her subject. The subject is alive, breathing, changing, growing. When at all possible, my work is done from life. I find that when I work this way, the resulting painting is not just about the subject, but about my relationship with it. Then the painting is about my attempt to understand how light falls across the surface, reflecting, absorbing, glistening. It's about how the sunlight changes from hour to hour, affecting the landscape. Then the painting is about my response to an elusive expression or thought drifting across the miracle of the human face and the emotional power it contains. Then the painting is about my humbleness in attempting to understand the details of the fragrant surface of pastry, the perfect complexities of a flower, or the workings of a machine. Then the painting is about my immediate and intuitive attempt to form a composition, frantically, before the truck drives away, the frosting melts, the flower wilts, or the person falls asleep. Working from life has blessed me with an intimate, reverent, and extraordinary relationship with the world from which I will never stray.
